Show information

The Borgias (created, written and produced by Neil Jordan) is a historical fiction show that follows the once mighty family of Rodrigo Borgia, who became Pope Alexander VI in 1492, and their “heavenly” rise into power. With the aid of his children – Cesare, Juan, Lucrezia and Gioffre – and his mistresses Vannozza and Giulia “La Bella” Farnese – Rodrigo rules the Christian world and commits virtually every crime imaginable in order to gain and maintain his family’ power.

The Borgias, an Italian dynasty of Spanish origin, prove themselves to be an unstoppable force, but behind closed doors this notorious family hides many secrets, lies, jealousy and deceptions. As they struggle to remain in power, they begin to see what is ultimately being sacrificed for that power: the safety of the family itself. It was a scandalous Pontificate, even for Renaissance standards, that would eventually precipitate The Reformation. Their saga is so intriguing that Mario Puzo based his characters of “The Godfather” on this historical family.

Oscar Winner Jeremy Irons leads the cast in this Golden Globe and Emmy Awards nominated role as Alexander VI. The Pope’s children (the most famous being Cesare and Lucrezia Borgia) and mistresses are fully developed characters, and along with all the fantastic supporting cast, bring this stunningly beautiful, deftly written and superbly acted show to life. Moreover, The Borgias is an Emmy Award winner for “Outstanding Costumes for a Series” (2011), “Oustanding Original Main Title Theme Music” (2011) and has received 14 other Nominations, 6 of those for the 3rd season alone.

Produced by Showtime Networks, The Borgias premiered on April 3, 2011 and was originally planned as a four-season series. But two weeks before the Season Three Finale aired, on June 5, 2013, the cancellation was announced, turning that episode into a Series Finale, with all plans for a proper conclusion being scrapped.

The campaign to bring The Borgias back for a suitable closure has the implied support of its creator, Neil Jordan, who has come out to the press and publicly said that “It’s not finished at all, as all the fans know…. There are a lot of fans out there who were kind of outraged and wanted to see this story finished and I’d love to finish it.”[1]
